HORACE, ND (Valley News Live) – A controversial law limiting business hours may be back in North Dakota.
House Bill 1150 A public hearing is scheduled for Wednesday in the North Dakota House Industry, Business and Labor Committee. If passed, it could ban certain businesses from opening from midnight to noon on Sundays, from car dealerships to clothing stores to restaurants.
“Wow, no that’s terrible. It’s really that bad,” said Taco Revolution social media manager Angel Gutierrez.
Those affected will include the Guitteriz family who own Horace Taco Revolution. They open early on Sundays.
“You look at my hours, we’re open from 9am to 3pm so now the hours are going to be shorter. We had a lot of opportunities to sell and definitely impacted the business,” said owner Jesus Gutierrez.
When their busy season comes in the summer, it can be detrimental to have to change the hours.
“I mean hundreds of people, immigrants from Mexico and they chose my food. On Saturdays and Sundays, I get the first order at 9 am, they are waiting for me for breakfast.”
This can be a headache not only on a professional level but also on a personal level.
“You know, there’s not much to do. Things are closing. I want to go out to eat. Take my mom out to eat, go out with friends. If we shorten these hours, I don’t see the economic benefit,” Angel added.
In 2019, the repeal was decided by just two votes. If lawmakers decide to roll back the Blue Act, the Gutierrez family is ready.
“We are committed to being here and respectful of time. Sometimes people ask why it is closed by 3 pm? Why did you stop later? the night The new laws you bring in will affect us even more. Because in the future, we are opening late,” added Jesus.
